Our Mission

Our mission is to link seniors to services that meet their needs.

History & Background

Age Concern Bermuda is a registered charity (#137) that was founded in 1978 as a result of a recommendation by a study commissioned by the Bermuda Government entitled “A Study of the Needs of the Physically Handicapped and the Elderly”. The recommendation stated that a group of caring older persons be formulated to advise the Government on issues that affect older persons in Bermuda, modelled after Age Concern in the United Kingdom.

Current and Future Programming

By the year 2030, persons over the age of 65 years will represent 24 per cent of the total population. Given Bermuda’s increasing aging population, we are preparing to take on a more dynamic approach to meet the needs identified in the local community.

Several local studies on the elderly in Bermuda undertaken over the years, including that recently performed by Fordham University (Ageing in Bermuda- Meeting the Needs of Seniors 2004), indicate the need for coordination across services and information and education programmes. The Fordham University study also reveals that 55 per cent of the caregivers surveyed and 50 per cent of the organizations surveyed indicate that they utilise the services of Age Concern Bermuda to access information about seniors programming.

With this research at hand, the Board of Directors of Age Concern identified a plan whereby the organization will focus on strengthening information sharing between seniors and service providers through following activities:

The Seniors’ Test for Ageing Trends and Services (STATS) survey, conducted every five years to gauge the trends and service needs of seniors.

The Information and Call Centre, which includes providing information, advice and web and print resources directories.

The LINK Programme, that works with the private sector to create new products and services for seniors.

The Handyman Programme – that links seniors to subcontractors who are vetted by the police and approved by Age Concern.
