It
is often said that Bermuda is one of the “most
wired” countries in the world. To put a figure
to that assertion, The Economist’s World
In Figures 2003 Edition shows Bermuda leads the
world in the number of telephone lines per capita
which stands at a staggering 87.2 per 100. This ‘first
world’ telecommunications infrastructure
is one of a handful of reasons consistently given
when international businesses are asked “why
Bermuda?”. A survey commissioned by the Ministry
of Telecommunications in 2002 finds that 94% of
Bermuda companies use internal e-mail, 92% use
external e-mail, 72% are making electronic payments,
68% have intranet, 47% have a website for promotional
purposes and 68% plan to have a website in the
next two to three years.
While
quality connections have been a Bermuda hallmark
for generations, competitively priced long distance
service has only recently become a reality. Rates
have fallen from $1.25 and up per minute in 1997,
to as low as $.16 per minute today.
Lower
long distance prices are a direct result of the
introduction of competition within the industry.
In the late 1990’s Bermuda had three licensed
telecommunications providers, today there are many.
All are overseen and regulated by the Ministry
of Telecommunications and E-commerce which is assisted
by the Telecommunications Commission.
This
quickly changing industry consistently rolls out
new products and offers both residential and corporate
customers options for cellular, internet, local
and long distance service. Find them
