In
1926 The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ)
was established by the Bermuda Government to
support a growing tourism industry. Since then,
the Aquarium has become a leader in environmental
education and conservation. The effort of two
support agencies, the Bermuda Zoological Society
(BZS) and the Friends of the Bermuda Aquarium
(FOBA) were critical to this evolution. With
a membership of 15% of all Bermuda residents,
the BZS is one of the largest and most respected
organizations in the community while the Friends
of the Bermuda Aquarium is a smaller, more recently
formed U.S.-incorporated organization. Since
becoming a fully accredited member of the American
Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 1993,
BAMZ has won four prestigious awards, has rapidly
earned a reputation for excellence and has become
a well-respected member of this association.
The
shared mission of BAMZ, BZS and FOBA is “to
inspire appreciation and care of island environments.” We
fulfil our mission through our animal habitat
exhibits, which focus on species from oceanic
islands, as well as related conservation, education
and research programmes
Exhibits/Programmes
• Recent Additions - The Natural History Museum. At a cost of $1.7 million,
it focuses on the Island’s geology, native biodiversity and habitats.
• The
Aquarium displays over 200 species of fishes
and invertebrates, and our 140,000-gallon North
Rock Exhibit was the first living coral exhibit
of this scale in the world.
• With
more than 300 birds, reptiles and mammals on
display from oceanic islands, the Zoo is committed
to the exhibition, breeding and reintroduction
of threatened and endangered species.
• The
Bermuda Biodiversity Project (BBP) won the “Regional
Conservation Award” from the American Zoo & Aquarium
Association. Our BBP is the umbrella for research
into local species, cataloguing and mapping the
Island’s terrestrial and marine flora and
fauna.
• The
BBP is home to the Bermuda Biodiversity Strategy & Action
Plan – a true conservation plan, assigning
responsibility for action to various environmental
organizations and government departments.
• BAMZ
and BZS provide school classes for more that
9,000 school children and continue to assist
the Department of Education in writing the curriculum
for Government schools.
• There
is a roster of almost 300 volunteers who spend
countless hours assisting throughout BAMZ and
the BZS, assisting staff seven days a week in
the Zoo, Aquarium, Museum, as tour guides and
in the Education department.
• We
host over 100,000 visitors per annum, and receive
membership support from more than 4,000 households
and companies.
• The
Ministry of the Environment developed the Department
of Conservation Services to capitalize on our
programs. This department is headquartered at
BAMZ. |
