Geocaching In Bermuda
Hey Bermuda, have you ever heard of geocaching?
Best described as a “worldwide treasure hunt”, geocaching is a fairly recent phenomenon in which technology and nature work hand in hand to promote outdoor exploration.
The idea behind geocaching is simple: using a GPS device (most Blackberries/Smartphones come equipped with them), you enter specific coordinates found at the official Geocaching website, then use them to locate a hidden “cache”. Hidden in publicly-accessible locations, caches come in various shapes and sizes, and your GPS will lead you within approximately 10 meters of a given cache location before you must hunt for it yourself.
Depending on size, caches are typically filled with trinkets such as key chains, toys and coins. Geocaching etiquette states that if you take anything from a cache, you should replace it with an item of your own. This way, items within the caches are circulated regularly and have a better chance of travelling long distances. You can even start your own!
Bermuda has near one hundred geocaches ready for you to discover, spread out around the island in various parks, beaches and historical sites. Visit geocaching.com to start your adventure today!

Dress her up! Bermuda Day Picnic Part II
Whatever you're having as your 'main' picnic dish on Bermuda Day, you'll want to have some show-stopping sides. Here are my recipes for potato salad two ways (I say potato, you say potaaato) and a good old-fashioned Mac 'n' Cheese. Enjoy!

Lord of the Fries
Bermuda Day is nearly here! For some, this means observing the Bermudian traditions and customs described in our Bermuda Day article. For others, it’s just a relief to have break from the daily grind and an excuse to relax on the couch with a cold beer: someone else can do the swimming, the camping, and stand out in the midday sun to watch the parade.
But all locals agree on one thing: May 24th is a chance to eat some of the best food Bermuda has to offer. Bermudians fire up the BBQ and the smell of hamburgers, fried chicken and Portuguese sausage floats on the breeze. Crunchy coleslaw, watermelon and sandwiches galore weigh down picnic baskets. In the next couple of blog articles, I’m going to share some recipes for the foods without which Bermuda Day just wouldn’t be complete, starting today with Fried Chicken.

What shall we do with the Race Week Sailor?
This week saw Bermuda play host to Bermuda International Invitational Race Week. This week-long sailing event is much anticipated by the local sailing community: it’s a highlight of the sporting and social calendar.
Bermuda Yellow Pages are sponsoring BIIRW this year, as they have done on previous occasions. Our close ties with Race Week are at least in part because of Gary Taylor – Yellow Pages Big Cheese and sailing fanatic. Gary competes every year in New Wave alongside Trevor Boyce and his team.
Anyway, the result of all this is that yours truly has put in no fewer than three appearances at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club this week, and the prize-giving ceremony tonight will drive that total up to a (frankly obscene) four.

The Royal Wedding: Unveiled
7.00 am: my alarm beeps. I fall out of bed and begin to grope my way towards the shower, when my sister (who has presumably heard me stumble into the bedside table and yelp in pain) calls me into the living room. I arrive just in time to see Kate Middleton step out of the big black car and begin the long walk up the aisle of Westminster Abbey.

Hot Cross Easter Bunnies
Update: The new photo attached to this blog post is the real deal - no iStock here! Photo and recipe credit to Judy Whayman.
One of the best things about Bermuda at Easter-time is home-made hot cross buns. Can you imagine my excitement when my neighbour rang my doorbell yesterday to deliver some that she'd made earlier that day? She's an amazing baker and these particular hot cross buns were really impressive specimens - supersized, with lots of large plump raisins and a glazed top.
I thought I'd include the recipe here so that you can give it a try - if you're Bermudian then chances are you'll already have your own hot cross bun recipe handed down through your family, but give these a go and compare the results. Maybe you'll prefer your tried and tested method, or perhaps you'll make a new discovery - who knows?

Let them eat Codfish cakes
Eaten throughout the year in Bermuda, on Good Friday codfish cakes are often served sandwiched in a hot cross bun, together with the usual Bermudian dollop of mayonnaise. They make a great snack for the hungry kite-flyer!

Lights, Camera, Production
It’s been all quiet on the blogging front recently, but not so in the Yellow Pages Office where phones have been ringing, photocopiers bleeping and motivational music playing (a dubious mix of Katy Perry, The Beatles, and Journey). We’re into the busiest weeks of the year for us: the run-up to printing the Yellow Pages Directory at the beginning of June (sales officially closed on March 28th, but if you still haven’t been in touch with us about your entry in the Yellow Pages then give us a call pronto!). Smiley-face badges have been distributed and the graphic design team are being reminded that coffee is their friend. And the worrying thing is that everyone keeps hinting darkly that the worst is yet to come: ‘Believe me girl, you haven’t seen anything. It’s going to get crazy. Craaaa-zy.’

It's all in the wrist
Happy Pancake Day/Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras!
If, like me, you didn’t quite get around to whipping up some batter and getting your flip on this morning (after years of practice I can now eat a piece of toast and put mascara on at the same time, but adding a hot frying pan to the routine would be frankly foolish) then you may be celebrating pancake day this evening. Crepes aren’t just for breakfast, they make a great dessert too! Here’s a very basic recipe to get you started:
