Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, located in Southampton, is one of the recognizable tourist attractions in Bermuda, offering an unrivalled view and more.
Constructed in the year 1846, it’s a tapered cylindrical tower with a balcony and lantern. Its height is 117 feet and the focal length is 354 feet. The beam of light runs 362 feet above sea level. It’s visible to planes flying 10,000 feet. Originally, the light was produced by a concentrated burner of four circular wicks. A kerosene burner was later used. The light is supplied by a 1000 watt electric bulb located at the center of the lens, which revolves around the light in a trough containing 1200 pounds of mercury. The lens makes a complete revolution once every 50 seconds.
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse is open Monday through Saturday from 930am until 430pm, and Sunday and holidays from 10am to 430pm. We are closed for the month of February.
