Scaur Hill Fort was starting to be built in the late 1860's by the British Army's Royal Engineers to protect the Royal Naval Dockyard against a possible land attack.
The fort consists of a dry moat cutting across Somerset Island from Ely's Harbour to the Great Sound, along with ramparts on the northern side of the ditch creating a killing zone below.
Now the fort is looked at as a centrepiece of a pleasant park, with high views of the ocean and the park area.
Free admission, open every day to the public.
