This may be Bermuda's most fascinating hidden gem. Tucked between Warwick Long Bay and the South Shore coastline, Southlands feels like stepping into another world. Massive banyan tree tunnels create natural archways overhead, hidden staircases and pathways disappear into the woodland, and winding trails lead past old quarry walls, secluded viewpoints, and remnants of what was once one of Bermuda's grandest private estates. Long before it became a public park, Southlands was famous for its spectacular gardens, ornamental ponds, rare imported plants, and carefully designed landscapes. While nature has reclaimed much of the estate, traces of its remarkable past can still be found throughout the property, making every visit feel like an exploration.
Local Insight:
Most people come for the banyan trees, but the best way to experience Southlands is to make an afternoon of the entire area. After exploring the trails, stop by Blu Bar & Grill for lunch overlooking the Great Sound. If you're still in the mood to explore, head over to Astwood Park where you'll find some of Bermuda's most dramatic cliff-top views and a hidden beach tucked beneath the cliffs. You can also continue to Warwick Long Bay and Jobson's Cove, creating one of the best self-guided nature and beach days on the island.
